Beau Monde: Toward a Redeemed Cosmopolitanism
SITE Santa Fe's 4th International Biennial
Opened July 14, 2001
Santa Fe, New Mexico
Curator: Dave Hickey
A highly crafted exhibition - more like an interior decorator might approach an installation.
And as far as being a biennial, neither the selection of the artists, nor the number of artists included, is convincing enough to call this an "international" biennial. Of the 28 artists (and one architectural firm from California) included, only 9 were born outside of the U.S. (and many of those now live in the States). In fact most of the artists included in this exhibition were either born in California, or are currently living and working there.
Hickey may have attempted to challenge the existing notion of what constitutes a biennial but in the process merely created a somewhat unconventional thematic exhibition with limited interest. [Though most of the art journal reviews were actually quite favorable... they certainly didn't sway me.]
